Noted CBS News anchor Dan Rather was accosted and roughed up while trying to interview a Georgia delegate in 1963. The incident, which took place during a period of national mourning following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, serves as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by journalists in pursuit of the truth.
Rather was attempting to interview Vivian Malone Jones, one of the first two Black students to enroll at the University of Alabama. As he approached her, a white man attacked him, knocking Rather to the ground and punching him repeatedly.
The man was eventually apprehended and charged with assault. Rather sustained minor injuries in the attack.
In an interview after the incident, Rather said that he was "not going to be intimidated" by such attacks. He said that he would continue to report on the news, even if it meant putting himself in danger.
Rather's courage and dedication to journalism are an inspiration to us all. He serves as a reminder that the pursuit of truth, even in dangerous times, is a noble cause.
