The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a federal law enforcement agency within the U.S. Department of Justice. The Marshals Service serves as the enforcement and security arm of the federal court system, and its primary missions are to protect the federal judiciary, apprehend federal fugitives, manage and sell seized assets acquired by criminals through illegal activities, and provide support to virtually all elements of the federal justice system. The Marshals Service was the first federal law enforcement agency in the United States and occupies a uniquely central position in the federal justice system.
