As chairwoman, Merkel led the CDU to electoral victories in the 2005, 2009, 2013, and 2017 federal elections. In 2005, Merkel was elected as the eighth Chancellor of Germany, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She served as Chancellor for four consecutive terms, from 2005 to 2021. During her tenure, Merkel played a key role in navigating numerous global crises, including the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. She also implemented reforms in healthcare, education, and energy, and promoted the transition to renewable energy sources.
